DETROIT – Two young children and two teenage women were injured Wednesday night when an argument at a park ended in a shooting, Detroit police report.

On Wednesday, May 1, a fight broke out between two 18-year-old women at a park near a high school on Detroit’s west side, near West Chicago and Southfield Road. Police say the argument turned physical, with one of the teenagers overpowering the other.

One of the teens in the fight called over her friend, a teenage male whose age was not immediately known. Police said the young man pulled a gun out of his backpack and fired it several times.

Four people were injured in the shooting.

A 3-year-old and a 6-year-old were shot and hospitalized. Detroit police Chief James White said they were in stable condition as of late Wednesday, but didn’t offer more details. Their identities were not released.

The children were not related to anyone involved in the shooting, police said. Their parents were at the hospital with them, but it wasn’t immediately clear who the children were with at the park.

Two 18-year-old women were also injured in the shooting. One of the women was involved in the fight. The other woman, who was pregnant, was not part of the fight, officials said.

Chief White said that it wasn’t clear yet how or why the pregnant woman was shot. She was hospitalized and in critical condition as of Wednesday night.

The other 18-year-old woman was also hospitalized in critical condition.

Police were still looking for the 18-year-old woman and the teenage male involved in the fight and the shooting. Chief White said late Wednesday that the department would do all it could, even look all night, to get the suspects “off the street.”

When it came to the shooting, White said, “It’s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.”

No other details were known at the time of this writing.
