OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The Great Lakes Water Authority is continuing crucial infrastructure work on 8 Mile Road, a project of significant importance to the regional water system. This work will provide redundancy and ensure the system’s resilience.
The infrastructure will close 8 Mile Road to through traffic under the I-275 overpass (1/4 mile east of Haggerty Road) from approximately 6 a.m. on Thursday (May 2) through roughly 5 a.m. on Monday (May 13).

The closure is in addition to traffic control already in place in the area.
During the closure, GLWA will install a 54-inch transmission main across 8 Mile Road and restore the section of roadway within the work area.
The closure is the last section of the 7.5 miles of transmission main to be installed between 14 Mile Road and 8 Mile Road as a part of the project.
Included in the closure will be:
- Southbound I-275 ramp left turn lane to Eastbound 8 Mile Road (Closure already in place);
- Eastbound 8 Mile Road ramp to Northbound I-275;
- Westbound 8 Mile Road ramp to Southbound I-275.
Detour routes for traffic during the closure are as follows:
Eastbound 8 Mile Road
- Through Traffic:
- Eastbound 8 Mile Road through traffic will be directed South on Haggerty Road to 7 Mile Road, then East on 7 Mile Road to Newburgh Road, then North on Newburgh Road back to 8 Mile Road.
- I-275 North Traffic
- Eastbound 8 Mile Road traffic headed to NB I-275 will be directed South on Haggerty Road to 7 Mile Road, then East on 7 Mile Road to the NB-I-275 ramp.
Westbound 8 Mile Road
- Through Traffic:
- Westbound 8 Mile Road through traffic will be directed South on Newburgh Road to 7 Mile Road, then West on 7 Mile Road to Haggerty Road, then North on Haggerty Road to 8 Mile Road.
- I-275 South Traffic:
- Westbound 8 Mile Road traffic headed to I-275 South will be directed South on Newburgh Road to 7 Mile Road, then West on 7 Mile Road to the I-275 South Ramp.
