OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A motorcyclist who had the right-of-way was killed Wednesday when a driver turned out in front of him at an Oakland County intersection.
Police said the crash happened around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the intersection of North Lapeer and West Oakwood roads in Oxford Township.
A 66-year-old Orion Township man was driving a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle south on Lapeer Road and approaching a flashing yellow signal at Oakwood Road, according to police.
At the same time, a 54-year-old Farmington Hills man was heading east on Oakwood Road in a 2012 Toyota Corolla and had stopped for a flashing red signal at Lapeer Road, officials said.
The Corolla made a right turn onto southbound Lapeer Road in front of the motorcycle, and the motorcycle crashed into the Corolla, police said.
The motorcyclist was thrown off and landed in the median. He was taken to a nearby hospital by Oxford Township firefighters and died from his injuries.
Officials said the driver of the Corolla was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released.
Speed might have been a factor in the crash, police said.
Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate.
