Michigan, a pivotal state in presidential politics, is once again in the spotlight. With just six months to go until the election, numerous polls indicate that this state is a battleground for both candidates, underscoring its crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.
Former President Donald Trump flew into Freeland Wednesday (May 1) evening for a return visit. He’s rallied there in past election cycles.
Trump hit his typical talking points, emphasizing border security, inflation, and the criminal charges against him. He also addressed the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade.
The abortion issue propelled Democrats to sweeping victories in Michigan.
“It brings it back to the states where every legal scholar and where most people wanted to see it, and it’s working out, so I just wanted to thank the Supreme Court for the wisdom and courage,” Trump said.
It’s no coincidence that on the day Trump wings his way to Michigan, President Joe Biden announced he was on the way to Detroit to headline the NAACP Freedom Fund dinner on May 19.
“They’re very pleased to come to Detroit,” NAACP President Rev. Wendell Anthony said. “Detroit is key, Michigan is key.”
The annual dinner has always been a prestigious event for politicians seeking office. If the margins are as slim here as polling suggests, Democrats will need a strong showing in Detroit.
“I’ve been saying for years this is the most important election of our lifetime, today it is the most important,” Anthony said. “We’ve got to be in it, we can’t watch from the sides we’ve got to be in it all.”
