DETROIT – Two women in what amounted to a fistfight set off a chain reaction that sent a 3-year-old, 6-year-old, and two 18-year-old women to the hospital with gunshot wounds on Detroit’s west side.
Shotspotter picked up the gunfire Wednesday (May 1) at 8:55 p.m. on Westfield and Faust avenues.
Neighbors who don’t want to be identified told us they clearly heard four shots and saw the injured children on the ground.
“Someone had to be tough and bring a gun to what would have been a fistfight between two women,” said Detroit police Chief James White.
Police say one of the women involved in the fight motioned to a friend, a guy around 18, who came over and started firing.
This is the area where Chief White held his first “Walk a Mile” Wednesday event of the summer.
Overall, for the last six months, Detroit’s shootings/homicides are down 28%, but this quadruple shooting shows there’s more work to be done.
The chief acknowledged the numbers Thursday during the department’s annual Day of Prayer.
“While these tragedies we work against are difficult, we know that our work is important, and we know we’re making a difference,” White said.
