Michigan new mom resource guide: Where to find support, community

We have gathered a list of resources for expecting and new parents.

When preparing for a baby

The following resources are for people who are preparing for a baby:

Pregnant people with Medicaid are eligible to receive free care at home from the Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP). More information can be found at michigan.gov/mihp.

The Nurse-Family Partnership is a program to help young, first-time expectant mothers from early pregnancy through their child’s second birthday. A trained nurse works with them to offer help and advice, visit them at home, and answer questions. More information can be found at mihomevisiting.com.

Programs for infants up to 12 months

Home visiting programs

Michigan has eight home visiting programs that work with moms and families with infants. The programs are: Maternal Infant Health Program, Early Head Start, Infant Mental Health, Nurse-Family Partnership, Healthy Families America, Parents as Teachers, Family Spirit, and Play and Learning Strategies.

The programs are free and meant to give extra support and training to parents and caregivers in Michigan. There is no cost for qualified Michigan families.

Infant development program

Early On is an infant development program that provides support and help for babies who have a development delay or pre-existing health issue that could slow their development.

Food support

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally-funded Special Supplemental Nutrition Program of the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. The program is for low and moderate income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Glamorous Moms Foundation: Aims to promote mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness n women and expectant mothers.

Fourth Tri Sanctuary: Provides mothers with a shared experience after the birth of their baby.

Nature’s Playhouse: Focuses on providing services for families expecting new children and in the first few years of their child’s life.

The Mama Hub: Offers prenatal to postpartum education, resources, and community to empower mothers and birthing parents during their early parenting journey.

Honey. For Moms: Honey is an inclusive motherhood development center located in Ferndale. It specializing in mental health, infant feeding support and classes.

Detroit Mom: Detroit Mom is a collective of 70 + women living in and around Detroit, with different backgrounds, beliefs, opinions, viewpoints and stories. We write individual blog posts with the hope of reaching and connecting with the community.
