Detroit’s former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who was sentenced to multiple counts of extortion, fraud, and bribery, among other charges, in federal court in 2017, says he doesn’t owe restitution to the feds.
After his conviction, Kilpatrick was initially assessed $4 million in restitution, which was amended to $1.7 million.
With credits applied and about $9,000 he paid himself, the debt, according to federal prosecutors, is $824,774.56. Kilpatrick filed this with the court.
He’s also requesting a hearing in federal court to argue his point. He’s asking that it be moved to Georgia because he says that’s where he lives, but he’s seen it daily at a home in Novi. He’s also filed this.
Kilpatrick was let out of prison 16 years early after former President Donald Trump commuted his sentence in 2021.
