There are prescribed burns scheduled to take place in Michigan across four counties on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources uses prescribed burns to help keep lands and forests healthy.
The burns are conducted by DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas when the weather is appropriate. Local authorities have been made aware.
Lower Peninsula burns:
These burns are all intended to set back woody vegetation.
- Livingston County: 109 acres in Hamburg Township. Expected to start around 1 p.m.
- Missaukee County: 340 acres in Norwich Township. Expected to start around 11 a.m.
- Oceana County: 120 acres in Pentwater Township. Expected to start around 12 p.m.
Upper Peninsula burns:
The burn in the Upper Peninsula is also intended to set back and/or remove woody vegetation and to promote sharp-tail grouse and whitetail deer habitat.
- Schoolcraft County: 335 acres in Hiawatha Township. Expected to start around 11 a.m.
