Signage has been posted around the lake to notify visitors of the possibility and to contact Metroparks police if the alligator is sighted.
Alligators are not native to Michigan, so if one appears, it is most likely the result of someone releasing a pet alligator into the lake.
If an alligator is sighted, residents and visitors should not approach it. Instead, they should immediately contact the Metroparks Police at 810-227-8910 to ensure their safety.
Officials say residents or visitors with pets or wildlife should not be released and relocated to the Metroparks.
