WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Two people were killed and 14 others -- including eight children -- were injured when a drunk Michigan woman crashed into a group of family members, police said.
2 killed in crash
The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024, on the shoulder of South Wacousta Road, near Corrison Road, in Watertown Township.
Officials said Ashley Monroe, 35, of Perrinton, Michigan, was driving drunk when she crashed into the family.
Jonathan Esch, 30, of Grand Haven, and Daniel Harris, 42, of Grand Ledge, were pronounced dead at the scene.
14 injured
A 38-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
Police said 13 others suffered non-life-threatening injuries:
- A 61-year-old woman.
- A 36-year-old woman.
- A 33-year-old woman.
- A 32-year-old woman.
- A 28-year-old woman.
- A 16-year-old girl.
- An 8-year-old girl.
- A 7-year-old boy.
- Two 6-year-old girls.
- A 3-year-old girl.
- A 2-year-old boy.
- A 2-year-old girl.
Officials said all 14 people were taken to the hospital. Eight of them had been released by Sunday evening.
Drunk driving charges
Monroe drove away from the crash scene and was arrested several miles away, police said.
She was brought to the Clinton County Jail and charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, two counts of failure to stop at the scene of a crash when at fault causing death, six counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and one count of failure to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in serious impairment or death.
Monroe was arraigned Monday at 65th District Court and given a $1 million bond.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
