DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Dearborn Heights woman is now facing a murder charge after her boyfriend died from a gunshot to the neck.

Officers were called at 2:38 a.m. May 1, 2024, to a home in the 25100 block of Colgate Street in Dearborn Heights.

When they arrived, police said they found a 41-year-old Dearborn Heights man suffering from a gunshot wound to his neck. Medical officials rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment, but the man died four days later, on May 5.

Police said the man got into an argument with his girlfriend, Leah Renee Johnson, 30, of Dearborn Heights. Johnson is accused of pulling out a handgun and shooting the man in his neck during the dispute.

Johnson was arrested and originally charged with assault with intent to murder and one felony firearm violation. The assault with intent to murder charge has been changed to a second-degree murder charge due to the man’s death.

She was arraigned Wednesday, May 15, at 20th District Court on the new charge and remanded to jail.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 12.
