Video: Huge smoke cloud from Windsor fire visible from Detroit

Windsor building caught fire Friday morning

DETROIT – Smoke from a fire in Windsor, Ontario could be seen billowing across the sky Friday morning, including from the Detroit side of the river.

Our helicopter camera captured a massive smoke plume emanating from a burning Windsor building after sunrise on Friday, May 24. The line of smoke appeared to stretch for miles, and could be seen from Downtown Detroit.

Watch the chopper footage in the video player up above. The footage was recorded at about 6:09 a.m.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services said on social media they were battling a blaze at the corner of East Wyandotte Street and Parent Avenue, a few blocks inland from the Detroit River. A building appeared to catch fire, destroying much, if not all, of the interior.

Officials did not say what the building was that caught fire. Local media outlets reported that the building was under construction, and that its roof caught fire.

It was not said whether the fire resulted in any injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

At about 10 a.m., the fire department said it was still working to extinguish the flames. People living in the area were encouraged to close their windows “for the next few hours” as of 10 a.m.
