DETROIT – There’s a heavy police presence following a shooting on Detroit’s east side.
The shooting occurred on Monday (May 27) in the 11100 block of Beaconsfield Street just south of Morang Avenue.
Officials say the shooting was a critical police incident, but neighbors and family members say that there was a shooting at the home with the possibility of a fatality.
Police say there was a woman who lives in the home with her adult son who came to visit here on Memorial Day.
Officials say the man was in the throes of a mental health breakdown. They say he was being manic for the last seven or so days causing his mother to try to get him some sort of treatment prior to Monday’s shooting.
There is no word exactly what occurred on Monday that caused him to breakdown.
Officials aren’t saying rather police shot the man or if he shot a family member. All that Local 4 was told was that a shooting occurred and that two people were taken to a Metro Detroit hospital.
“He was actually visiting,” said Keachia Thompkins. “She kept him and tried to keep him calmed down and go to the hospital, but he didn’t want to go. I don’t know what happened from there. I came over this morning to bring her a coffee and she didn’t answer. I guess she was busy but she ended up calling me telling me that she was fine and then I get this call so I am still trying to find out myself.”
Detroit police Chief James White is at the scene to describe what officially took place at the home, but it appears that there was a police-involved shooting as of 6 p.m.
“At approximately 4:05 p.m., officers from the 9th Precinct responded to this home here on a report of a person, a male, being shot in the head. Upon arrival, there were two women on the porch screaming someone had been shot. Upon entering the residence, they encountered a male who was armed. Shots were exchanged. He was shot. I don’t have the details yet to report how many times. I do know that the officers fired three shots, and the man is deceased.”
