DETROIT – Safety concerns are growing after a teenager was shot and killed walking home from school.
His family said he was likely targeted because of a pair of shoes.
Elijah Reece was shot three times as he was walking home from East English Village Preparatory Academy on Detroit’s east side. It was 4 p.m. at the time. His murder is sparking anger and outrage in the community.
A vigil was held Monday, May 27, to honor Reece. He was remembered as a fun-loving 16-year-old.
“Senseless,” said his mother, Jamie Reece. “Y’all killed my baby for nothing.”
Reece’s mom said he bought a pair of $1,200 shoes from the late designer Alexander McQueen.
No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
