Macomb County man sentenced for practicing medicine without license

Husam Thamin Abed, 54, of Sterling Heights, has been convicted of the unauthorized practice of a health profession, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine. (Kent County Sheriff's Office)

LANSING, Mich. – A 54-year-old man from Sterling Heights was sentenced to 30 days in Kent County jail for practicing medicine without a license.

Husam Thamin Abed was convicted in March of six counts of unauthorized practice of a health profession.

Abed had practiced at his Grand Rapids clinic as a licensed physician within the specialty of urogynecology. He lost his license in 2022 after being accused of performing inappropriate vaginal treatments on girls for conditions they didn’t have. The girls were reportedly as young as 12 years old.

He went on to treat a patient the day after losing his license.

Abed was sentenced May 29 to 30 days in the Kent County Jail, a $2,000 fine and was ordered to pay $1,000 in court costs, $60 in DNA costs, a $130 Crime Victim Rights assessment and $340 in state costs.
