Morning 4: One Michigan ghost town happens to be underwater -- and other news

Here are the top stories for the morning of May 29, 2024

Legend has it, on quiet nights -- just like tonight -- you can still hear the sounds of a lake. Waves, ducks, the whole thing. Also during the day too. (Belleville Lake) (WDIV)

Morning 4 is a quick roundup of stories we think you should know about to start your day. So, let’s get to the news.

The Michigan city that sits underneath a lake

For most people, cities are typically above water. You can understand why -- there’s breathable oxygen, food doesn’t get soggy and there’s less of a chance of a Moby Dick attack. The chance is still there, just less.

Michigan is home to many ghost towns -- some are buried under sand, some are believed to be cursed, and some are underwater. No, I’m not talking about a home for the rumored mermen of Lake Superior, but something much closer to our area.

From our GM: 4 longtime WDIV journalists, others are retiring in July. Here’s why

I got into journalism by accident. I grew up here, went to high school in Southfield, and got placed into the journalism class responsible for publishing the school newspaper the first term of my freshman year.

It was a class for juniors and seniors, but the teacher gave me my first break. He said, “Let’s give this kid a chance. I think he might have a knack for understanding the news and what’s important.” I haven’t left since.

I share this story because -- having worked in and around newsrooms for 30+ years -- I knew it would be newsworthy when the most watched and trusted local news organization in Detroit did something we’ve never done before. Because for me, this is home. I knew this news would affect our loyal viewers.
