DETROIT – A viral video that showed an ATV rider speeding recklessly down a street on the city’s east side in front of a Detroit police vehicle is getting a lot of attention online.
The driver appeared to be the least concerned about the officer while riding down Woodward Avenue, as they could be seen doing tricks.
Local 4 showed people the video, and they could not believe the stunt occurred in broad daylight in front of officials.
“I hope they didn’t hurt nobody or run over no child,” said Jackie Williams. “This is stupid and ignorant.”
Williams is a senior who lives on Woodward Avenue. She was baffled by the ATV driver, who didn’t seem to care about his own safety or anyone else’s.
“He could have hit a child,” Williams said. “You could have hit anybody. An old lady like me.”
Thanks to a video obtained by Metro Detroit News, you can notice the daredevil riding right by an officer who doesn’t seem to move.
Detroit police Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes says there’s a reason for that.
“It was a tragedy enough,” said Hayes. “Our officers were doing exactly what they were trained to do as they were rendering aid, clearing the scene, or investigating that scene. “For these ATVs to come by and taunt, it was just wrong on so many different accords.”
Detroit police also didn’t want to chase so the community wouldn’t be at risk. However, the incident is still under investigation, with DPD still pursuing the driver of the ATV, and they could use your help.
“Chief (James) White has a 12-point strategy that certainly our department is ramping up, and we’re highly engaged in and will continue to address these issues,” Hayes said. “If you know who that is or if you know where those bikes are stored, again, please reach out. You can call anonymously and reach out.”
“The streets are wet, and I just think it shouldn’t even be allowed on the streets,” said Padro Floyd.
“They done lost they rabbit EXPLETIVE mind,” Williams said.
If you know who the driver of the ATV is and where the ATV is stored, take a look at Detroit Rewards TV. Any information that leads to the seizure of the ATV could earn you $250.
