Cyclist’s decision to speak up makes Pontiac safer, cleaner

PONTIAC, Mich. – The simple action of speaking up is making a big impact in Pontiac.

Small pieces of broken glass are adding up to a major problem for a young man who likes to spend his time traversing his neighborhood on his bike.

Eric Hipshire spends at least two hours riding his bike every day. On those bike rides, he said he’s noticed a problem.

“Glass is a big problem here,” Hipshire said. “I can’t go anywhere without seeing it.”

He said he’s popped a few tires on the glass. He’s not the only one concerned.

“We take maintaining clean safe neighborhoods really seriosly here,” said Mayor Tim Greimel.

When the mayor heard Local 4 was in Pontiac on Friday, May 31, he came out of a meeting to show us two fairly new street sweepers that will be used to get glass and debris off the streets.

It still remains the homeowner’s responsibility to weep up glass on the sidewalks.

“It makes a difference not just to that property owner, but to the entire neighborhood,” Greimel said.
