Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.
Wayne County – Seasonal allergies, stomach viruses, outdoor injuries
Dr. Joseph Schramski -- Emergency center, Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital
“Despite it being later in the season, there are still a lot of viruses going around, specifically, stomach bugs, which present with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Additionally, with the warmer weather, we are seeing lots of trauma, wrist injuries, bicycle accidents…. wear protection.”
Dr. Glen Clark -- Emergency Center Chief, Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital
“We are no longer seeing a lot of flu, RSV or COVID positives, though still some viral syndromes. We are seeing a lot more GI issues/stomach flu. Also, there have been a significant amount of seasonal allergy complaints.”
Oakland County – Stomach viruses, croup, seasonal allergies, falls, breathing issues
Emergency Department, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital
“We’re seeing a lot of falls here and stroke-like symptoms this week. Chest pain and breathing issues also are high on the list.”
Trinity Health Oakland Emergency Department
“Oakland is seeing a lot of traumas, particularly motor vehicle accidents. Typical seasonal allergies, no other trends.”
Washtenaw County – Outdoor injuries, stomach viruses, seasonal allergies, asthma & COPD flare-ups, influenza
Dr. Marisa Louie Medical Director of Children’s Emergency Services, Michigan Medicine
“We are seeing typical spring/early summer visits with plenty of injuries of all sorts, some asthma, some GI illnesses causing vomiting and diarrhea.”
Dr. Brad Uren -- Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Michigan Medicine
“Less allergies, less URIs and less GI overall. Still seeing some difficulty breathing in COPD and asthma patients with some combination of the above but not as much as last week.”
Monroe County – Did not report this week
Macomb County – Outdoor injuries, seasonal allergies, asthma flare-ups, COVID, strep throat, sore throats
Dr. Matthew Steck -- Emergency physician at McLaren Macomb
“The main reason patients are seeking care in the emergency department is due to activity-related injuries, mainly broken bones in extremities. Weather fluctuation continues to cause many allergy complications, especially for asthma sufferers, who are experiencing minor breathing complications. After a notable increase last week, viral upper respiratory infections have significantly tapered off.”
Dr. Maria Samuel -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Sterling Heights
“We are seeing Coronavirus infections in elderly patients, a few strep throat cases, viral sore throats and some allergy flare-ups.”
Livingston County -- Seasonal allergies, asthma flare-ups, outdoor injuries
Trinity Health Livingston Emergency Department
“Lots of fair weather related injuries, but no illness related trends.”
