Stolen equipment joyride leaves trail of destruction on Detroit’s east side

Construction gear was stolen from a project near residents homes

DETROIT – A woman on Detroit’s east side is dealing with property damage from someone’s joyride, not in a stolen vehicle, but on stolen industrial equipment.

“He just came on up on a drive and drove up the sidewalk and kept on going,” said Valencia Daniel.

It may not seem like much, but Daniel says the damage done to her home Monday around 9 p.m. is causing a world of headaches.

“My fence that’s been here for 100 years,” Daniel said. “I don’t know what to say. It’s been here a long time, and this is really something.”

Daniel says the stolen equipment was construction gear taken from a project down the street from her home.

“I said, ‘Did anybody steal your equipment,’ and they told me yes, somebody stole their equipment,” Daniel said. “They came down today. One of the supervisors came and looked at the video.”

She even caught the alleged thief before leaving a path of destruction on surveillance video.

“Everybody’s checking their cameras around here to get a good glimpse because he came this way,” Daniel said. “I didn’t know that was him until I saw he had the vest and he had a mask on.”

The incident adds to the long list of problems she’s dealing with.

“This is a lot,” Daniel said. “Looking at this and how deep that is. It’s just cement. I just lost my father. And I was making a memorial for him with the flowers because he liked this.”

“I hope I can get this fixed and taken care of ASAP,” Daniel said. “I don’t like my property looking like this. I mean, this is just terrible.”

If you know the man’s (pictured in the video) whereabouts or where the stolen equipment is located, please call the Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1800-Speak-Up.
