DETROIT – An alarming explosion of violence over the weekend has law enforcement expanding the focusing its “One Detroit” police plan.
There were nine people shot over the weekend in Detroit, with 90 shots being fired in separate incidents around the city.
Derrick Batten has about seen it all at his home on Detroit’s west side, but one thing he said he missed is seeing police patrolling neighborhoods.
“Back in the day when they had police walking the beat, it was even better,” said Batten.
Detroit police in the past walked the beat in Detroit neighborhoods up and down streets being visible, helping families.
Local 4 has shown you how federal, state, and Metro Detroit law enforcement are targeting a pair of Detroit’s most dangerous precincts in the 8th and 9th, where they’re going after illegal guns and those who use them.
But also to show more of a police presence and now, after a violent weekend, Detroit police Chief James White says One Detroit will likely expand into the 2nd Precinct, focusing on a more robust police presence at large gatherings.
“The U.S. attorney has allowed us to expand that program as she’s very committed to assisting us in reducing crime and eliminating victims of gun violence, in particular whether that gun violence occurs at a party in a backyard, at a neighborhood or through some conflict in our community,” said White.
