LIVONIA, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a tornado touched down in Livonia Wednesday afternoon as severe storms moved across Metro Detroit.
A line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved through the region Wednesday afternoon into early Wednesday evening. Wednesday evening, we received reports of damage across the region -- including a tornado touchdown in Wayne County.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a tornado touchdown occurred around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Livonia. Damage reports coming in from the Livonia Emergency Manager stated that extensive tree damage had occurred extending from Lyndon to Norman Street to 6 Mile and Merriman Road.
The National Weather Service tells us, “After talking with the Livonia Emergency Manager, the damage reported lines up with some weak circulation that was observed on radar. The combination of pictures and radar data would suggest this is a weak tornado touchdown.”
The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday night that an EF-1 Tornado with maximum sustained winds of 90-95 MPH did indeed touchdown in Liviona.

Other damage reports included:
- A gas station awning collapse two miles east of Farmington in Oakland County.
- A 10-inch tree limb snapped one mile north of Huntington Woods in Oakland County.
- A 5-inch tree limb snapped in Berkley in Oakland County.
- Two damage reports of trees snapped in Macomb County.
No rating had been issued for this tornado as of Wednesday afternoon. The NWS was set to conduct a damage assessment in Livonia on Wednesday evening.
