My name is Mary, and I am a producer here at Local 4. I grew up about a mile away from Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township.

Now, growing up next to the base brought its own unique soundtrack.

While others heard the birds chirping and the lawnmowers going, I was treated to the roar of jet engines with an occasional sonic boom, plus the thud, thud, thud of choppers flying overhead. It’s not too often an 8-year-old can tell the difference between a Chinook and a Coast Guard Dolphin chopper but this girl could and still can.

These sounds were woven into my everyday life and my experience of living next to a base I will always enjoy, the Selfridge Air Show.

Air shows offer an exhilarating spectacle that goes beyond just witnessing wonder in the sky and today I am going to explain why you should think about make a trip to my side of town and witness the Selfridge Air Show.

At the Selfridge Air Show, you have the unique privilege of witnessing some of the world’s most skilled pilots in action. This year, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are here, showcasing their speed and precision in the sky. That’s not all; the Royal Canadian Air Force also joins the fun with its CF-18 Hornets. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss.

Second, you get a chance to look behind the curtain. Selfridge is an active base, and while people can’t just visit for a day of fun, there are opportunities to get a close-up look at the base and all the planes that live there.

Selfridge is not just any base, it’s a piece of living history. Did you know it’s one of the oldest continuous operating bases in the entire country? The military took it over back in 1917 and trained pilots for World War I and II. The Tuskegee Airmen even lived and trained at Selfridge during WWII. It’s a place we can all be proud of.

Finally, one of the best parts about the Selfridge air show? Families can enjoy seeing planes and amazing skills in the sky, and no one has to pay a dime. The Selfridge air show is free to attend, and who doesn’t love the word free.

One final piece of advice, wear some good shoes, you’ll be standing for a bit of time.

What do you say? Head out to Selfridge this Saturday and Sunday for some family fun. I promise you won’t regret the decision. So get ready to soak in the excitement and witness amazement in the sky.
