AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The driver who ran from the scene of a deadly crash in Auburn Hills was located and arrested thanks to a citizen who called 911 when they witnessed someone lying down in a wooded area about a half mile from the crash site.

The 38-year-old Lake Orion man was found on Friday (June 7) at 5 p.m.

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. when an Auburn Hills police officer saw a red 2020 Kia Forte speeding on Lapeer West Road.

The officer attempted to stop the Kia, but the 38-year-old did not stop and reached speeds of 88 miles per hour.

Officials say the officer stopped pursuing the driver after half a mile near Zelma Drive.

The officer turned off their patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and stopped his vehicle.

Police said the Kia continued south on Lapeer Road, went over a small hill, and headed toward Walton Boulevard.

The officer said he saw smoke coming from the intersection of Walton Boulevard and Perry Street and headed in that direction.

Police said the Kia crashed into a 2002 Ford F-150. The 38-year-old man driving the Kia ran from the crash scene.

A woman who had been a passenger in the Kia was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the hospital. He has been identified as a 68-year-old man from Auburn Hills.
