Police search for driver who ran from scene after deadly Auburn Hills crash

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Police are searching for a driver who ran from the scene of a deadly crash in Auburn Hills.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024, an Auburn Hills police officer saw a red 2020 Kia Forte speeding on Lapeer Road. The officer attempted to stop the Kia, but the driver did not stop and reached speeds of 88 miles per hour.

The officer stopped pursuing the driver after a half a mile, near Zelma Drive. The officer turned off their patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and stopped his vehicle.

Police said the Kia continued south on Lapeer Road, went over a small hill, and headed toward Walton Boulevard. The officer said he saw smoke coming from the intersection of Walton Boulevard and Perry Street and headed in that direction.

Police said the Kia crashed into a 2002 Ford F-150. The man driving the Kia ran from the scene of the crash. A woman who had been a passenger in the Kia was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford was pronounce dead at the hospital. He has been identified as a 68-year-old man from Auburn Hills.

Auburn Hills police officers and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team searched for the man driving the Kia, but he still has not been found.

The investigation is still active. Police said there is no reason to believe there is any danger to the public.
