DETROIT – The concert to open the newly renovated Michigan Central Station will be talked about for decades, but now the public finally gets a first look at the show’s real star.
The train station opened for public tours on Friday (June 7), and tickets are already sold out.
Entire families came to see what Ford has so lovingly restored.
“I joined the Marine Corps in 1957 and my father brought me here to get on the train to go to Camp Pendleton, “said Dr. Gordon Thomas.
Thomas brought his whole family and marveled at all that had been done.
“This means so much to those of us who were raised in Detroit and saw the decline of this place, so just walking through here is a real tearjerker,” said Thomas.
I don’t think video and still photography adequately capture the beauty of the building.
Plenty of people shed more than a few tears, just so overwhelmed by the restoration.
The building is the jewel, but it will also house rotating art installations.
The first is an interactive light sculpture. Art program Co-Director Kelly Kivland says they felt the enormity of the expectations for such a beautiful space.
“It’s a building that has so much history, layers of history for our community in terms of what its potential can and will be and how we want people to explore and feel very comfortable in our spaces,” Kivland said.
Tickets are sold out through June 16. However, a self-guided tour will be available on Fridays and Saturdays starting June 21 and running through August.
