BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Here’s everything we know about a plane crash in Washtenaw County that left a flight instructor dead and his student seriously injured.
Plane crash
A small plane crashed at 1:13 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2024, in the area of Michigan Avenue and Lima Center Road in Bridgewater Township, which is in Washtenaw County.
Police said people along the highway did everything they could to help after witnessing the crash.
Crash scene
The crash happened in a large field, and officials from several different departments were called, including Washtenaw County deputies and medical officials with Huron Valley Ambulance.
Aerial footage of the scene showed the plane had severe front-end damage, and one of the wings had broken.
One person had to be extricated from the wreckage.
Flight instructor killed
Michigan State Police said the person who died in the crash was a flight instructor.
He has been identified as a 46-year-old man from Dearborn.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Student injured
The only other person aboard the plane at the time of the crash was a flight student.
The 22-year-old from North Carolina is studying at the University of Michigan, officials said.
He was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor and listed in critical condition.
Investigation
So far, no official details about what caused the crash have been revealed.
Michigan State Police took over the initial investigation of the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are also involved in that investigation.
