DETROIT – The Detroit Federation of Teachers is pushing to get a new contract for its membership by June 21, when the current deal expires.
Teachers and the district have been bargaining since February, and substantial progress has been made, especially regarding salary, but other issues remain to be ironed out.

Teachers showed up at Tuesday’s (June 11) school board meeting to push for action.
“We had our superintendent’s contract extended 18 months in advance, and so our members deserve the same respect,” said Detroit Federation of Teachers President Lakia Wilson-Lumpkins. “They deserve the same sort of consideration to be able to rest and be comforted all summer long knowing their security, their compensation, and their benefits are all in place.”
“I think we are closer than we’re farther away with a couple of outstanding issues that still need to be negotiated, but we as a board superintendent team know that DPSCD teachers should be the highest paid in the country,” said Detroit Public School District Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti
The last time the district and its union had a deal before the current one expired was 1994.
