Detroit’s first Black McDonald’s franchise owner, Dr. William Pickard, dies at 83

Pickard also was an investor in MGM Grand Detroit

DETROIT – One of the nation’s most successful Black entrepreneurs, Dr. William Pickard, 83, has died.

Pickard, 83, passed away Wednesday (June 12) at his West Palm Beach, Florida home.

The 83-year-old made his mark in 1971, becoming one of the first Black franchise owners of a McDonald’s restaurant in Detroit.

Pickard also was an investor in MGM Grand Detroit.

In 2003, Pickard played a pivotal role in establishing Real Times Media, a significant step in his lifelong commitment to amplifying the voices of the African American community.

The media group now owns the Michigan Chronicle and other African American newspapers, a testament to his dedication and influence.
