FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A man recently arrested by police in Farmington Hills was arrested again for what he reportedly said to them in a phone call about the initial arrest.
Shawn Bonner is now facing a far more serious charge. He was arrested for making terrorist threats against the Farmington Hills Police Department.
“He indicated that he was going to bring a gang to not only assault our officers but to shoot and kill our officers,” said Chief Jeff King.
Police took the threats very seriously, as did the county prosecutor.
Bonner is said to be a member of the Sovereign Citizen movement, an anti-government extremist group. He was pulled over in a traffic stop by Farmington Hills officers after it was discovered he had a warrant for resisting arrest.
King said police bodycam footage captured him jump into the backseat of his girlfriend’s car and using his kids as a way to avoid going to jail.
“He retreated back into a seat, barricading himself between the two young infants, their car seats,” King said.
Police eventually made an arrest after de-escalating the situation, but after making bail, Bonner allegedly started calling the police station.
It even gets personal for one officer.
“This individual was able to contact the family member of one of our officers and issue a threat indicating that the individual knew the residential location of not only the officer, their family members, but to indicate that no one was safe at this point from from the start,” King said.
Bonner was tracked down and taken into custody in a similar fashion -- another barricaded situation with the girlfriend and children in the car.
“Our officers did a phenomenal job of negotiating and trying to talk him out of that car for 45 minutes,” King said. ‘We were able to shatter the window and take him into custody.”
He’s now facing new charges of making terrorist threats. Bond was set at $100,000.
