There has been more road construction than usual this summer, and the Michigan Department of Transportation is asking for patience.
MDOT Director Brad Wieferich is addressing recent concerns about the increased number of construction projects across the state.
Wieferich said more construction is happening than usual because they have the funding.
“It really comes down to this being a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we need to capitalize on funding that’s been provided for us,” he said.
The money to fund these projects comes from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan bond funding program and the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
“It’s a one-time deal that we have to really take advantage of the available funding to go out and take care of some of the busiest and economically critical corridors in the state,” Wieferich said.
While MDOT officials understand construction can be frustrating for drivers, they want to remind everyone to be patient and use caution in construction zones.
“Please know it will be worth the wait, and please slow down and pay attention in work zones for your safety and for the hard-working men and women employed by the road-building industry to complete this work,” Wieferich said.
