Officers save choking 18-month-old boy in Shelby Township

Infant is breathing independently, and expected to recover fully

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Shelby Township police have saved the life of 18-month-old boy, Mateo, who was choking.

The incident occurred on Thursday (June 13) at 4:32 p.m. when Shelby Township officers, along with Shelby Fire Department, were dispatched to the 7000 block of 24 Mile Road because Mateo was not breathing.

Officials say the first officer on the scene was directed upstairs, where the infant was lying on the ground, not breathing while turning blue as he did not have a pulse.

Officer N. Nye started to perform lifesaving CPR along with back thrusts. Officer Washburn arrived on the scene and assisted with CPR on the infant.

Family members said that the infant could be choking. Shelby Township FD arrived on the scene and continued with CPR.

The infant was loaded up into an ambulance and escorted by police to a Shelby Township hospital.

Shelby FD determined that the child had a pulse before being transported to the hospital.

Officials say the infant was intubated and in the NICU. An investigation showed that the child may have choked on a piece of food.

As of June 14, 2024, officials said the infant was no longer intubated, breathing independently, and expected to recover fully.

Officer Nye and officer Washburn saved a young child’s life by taking lifesaving measures and responding quickly.
