Rochester Hills mayor receives calls of support from around county after mass shooting

Mayor Bryan Barnett encourages residents to utilize mental health resources

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Longtime Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett said he never imagined the city would join the list of others that have experienced a mass shooting.

Barnett said city officials have received calls from The White House, the governor’s office, and nearly every member of Congress. Support has come in from leaders from other cities and towns,l too.

The mayor of Orlando called nearly eight years to the day after a gunman opened fire at Pulse nightclub in 2016, killing 49 and injuring dozens more. Those who called shared stories of encouragement and strategy in the aftermath.

While encouraging people to utilize the mental health resources that have been set up, Barnett also acknowledged the role of first responders.

“Yesterday, I was reminded of the heroism of the local men and women of the sheriff’s office and Rochester Hill Fire Department,” Barnett said. “You can’t imagine a scene with flip flops and ice cream where children had just been playing minutes ago. What they did and continue to do in serving our community, especially those injured, is exceptional.”

If you’re in need of support, The Family Assistance Center at 511 East Auburn Road will be staffed with therapists from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you’re unable to make it, you can also reach out to the nurse on call at 1-800-848-5533. They are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
