Officer shoots, kills 40-year-old man inside apartment complex in Wayne County

Man was suffering through a mental health crisis

WAYNE, Mich. – An officer has shot and killed a 40-year-old man inside an apartment complex in Wayne County.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (June 18) inside the Newberry Square apartment complex in the 35000 block of West Michigan Avenue in Wayne, MI.

Neighbors said they heard Wayne police enter the complex during the afternoon on Tuesday, but they don’t know why the police were called.

Residents said they heard the police knocking on doors before hearing a door open alongside some yelling before shots were fired.

It is unclear whether the shots heard were back-and-forth between the man and the police or simply shots from the officer.

Neighbors told Local 4 that they’d seen a deceased man inside the apartment complex at the hands of Wayne police.

The Michigan State Police are on the scene, and at 5:50 p.m., there were some raised voices as residents were extremely upset.

Officials say there were no injuries to officers, and there is no danger to the public.

Wayne police Deputy Chief Finley Carter said they received a 911 call from the 40-year-old man who was amid a mental health crisis.

Carter said the man told them that he was going to kill himself before officials arrived at the apartment complex.

Officials said they got the man to open the door and greeted the man cutting himself with a knife, leaving a tremendous amount of blood.

“Upon arrival, officers encountered the subject inside of his apartment, who was bleeding from some self-inflicted wounds and still armed with the knife,

“The officers did give him several verbal commands and attempted two less-than-lethal taser deployments that were ineffective.

The subject then charged towards the officers, in which one officer responded by firing several shots, which stopped him at the time. The child, who was unharmed, was removed from the apartment and turned over to his mother shortly thereafter.”

Officials say the 40-year-old man had been watching the 4-year-old child. It is unclear if the child saw what was happening or was in another room.

Police said Tuesday’s incident was not the first encounter they had with the man, as he had called in before during another mental health crisis.
