DETROIT – Police discovered a body on the shoulder of I-96 early Tuesday morning.
Here’s what we know.
Body discovered
Michigan State Police said the discovery was made around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
A man’s body was found along the eastbound lanes of I-96, near Schaefer Highway, on Detroit’s west side.
Man identified
State troopers said they went to the scene and identified the man as a 59-year-old from Fruitland Park, Florida.
What happened?
Investigators believe the Florida man was struck by a vehicle, which then fled the scene.
Officials don’t yet have any information about the vehicle.
Troopers are continuing to gather evidence, and the case is pending medical examiner review.
Highway closure
The eastbound lanes of I-96 were shut down at the Southfield Freeway. Drivers are being diverted to the express lanes.
Delays are expected as police continue to investigate.
It’s unclear when the highway will fully reopen.
