LIVONIA, Mich. – A large part of Livonia is under a boil water alert after the city lost water pressure Wednesday morning.

---> UPDATE: Livonia lifts boil water notice issued after water pressure loss

Low pressure was reported for about 30 minutes around 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

The area affected by the boil water alert is within 7 Mile, Joy, Wayne, and Inkster roads. That means residents who are south of 7 Mile Road, north of Joy Road, east of Wayne Road, and west of Inkster Road are within the boundaries.

The loss of water pressure was caused by a mechanical malfunction in a pressure-reducing valve, officials said. A contractor is evaluating what caused the valve to fail.

In the meantime, residents can’t drink the water. It must be brought to a boil for at least one minute and then cooled before use.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, ice, dishwashing, brushing teeth, and preparing food.

There are no restrictions on showering or washing clothes, officials said.

The Kirksey Recreation Center, the Senior Center, and Livonia libraries are still open.

City officials and Livonia police reported that some buildings completely lost water, while others experienced a decrease in water pressure. The police department is among those that lost water entirely.
