Why Michigan residents are being told to avoid Diamond Shruumz products

State officials are warning Michigan residents to avoid Diamond Shruumz products after a nationwide outbreak of serious illnesses.

Which products are affected?

Officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, as well as the Food and Drug Administration, said residents should not eat, sell, or serve the brand’s microdosing chocolate bars, infused cones, micro dose gummies, or macro dose gummies.

The products contain a proprietary blend of mushrooms, such as reishi and lion’s mane.

Illnesses reported

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been investigating the products since June 7. So far, 26 illnesses have been reported in 16 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Of the 26 people who have gotten sick so far, 16 have been hospitalized and 25 have sought medical care, officials said. No deaths have been reported.

Symptoms

People have reported seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, agitation, abnormal heart rates, hypertension, hypotension, nausea, and vomiting.

Where were these products purchased?

Diamond Shruumz products can be bought online and at smoke shops, vape shops, and stores that sell hemp-derived products like cannabidiol or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, according to the FDA.

Officials haven’t yet complied a full list of stores that sell Diamond Shruumz products, but they recommend nobody buy them from anywhere at this time.

What should you do?

If you own Diamond Shruumz products, you should throw them away.

Officials said the products might appeal to children and teenagers, so parents should discuss this information with their children and make sure these products aren’t in their homes.

Retailers should stop selling and distributing these Diamond Shruumz products until a safe means of return or disposal is determined.

Anyone who gets sick from Diamond Shruumz products should call a doctor and the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

Doctors who witness any related illnesses should report them to their local health department or the Poison Help Line.

Investigation status

As of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, FDA officials had collected samples of the Diamond Shruumz products for analysis.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the illnesses and what to do next.

FDA officials are in contact with the company about a possible voluntary recall.
