Ypsilanti coach caught on video assaulting middle school student is charged with assault

Initially, Josh Smith wasn’t arrested, but he was fired for assaulting the student

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Former Ypsilanti Middle School coach Josh Smith, who was caught on video attacking a student from behind, has been charged with assault.

The incident occurred during the week ending June 8 at 3:30 p.m. when Smith took off his shirt, wrapped it around the student’s neck, and began choking him.

Initially, Smith wasn’t arrested, but he was fired for assaulting the student.

Smith was charged on Tuesday (June 18) with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and assault and battery.

The bond was set at $75,000 with 10%, and a probable cause conference is set for June 27, 2024.
