Detroit father charged after 6-year-old boy finds gun, shoots self in thumb

DETROIT – A 34-year-old Detroit man is facing several charges after his 6-year-old son found an unsecured gun and shot himself in the thumb.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Morris Stephen Brown with safe storage violations premises under individuals control, minor present and injured self or another, felony in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm.

The child was injured at 4:35 p.m. on May 22, 2024, in a home on Ethel Street in Detroit. Prosecutors said the child found an unsecured handgun in the home and shot himself in the thumb. First responders transported the child to an area hospital for treatment.

Brown was arraigned on June 20, 2024, in 36th District Court. He received a $50,000 personal bond and is not allowed to possess any weapons. A probable cause conference is set for 8:30 a.m. on June 27, 2024, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on July 2, 2024.
