Father charged after 3-year-old shoots self in hand at Macomb County home

Man faces 4 charges

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A man is facing charges after his 3-year-old son shot himself in the hand at their Macomb County home, officials said.

Eastpointe police were called around 7 p.m. June 15, 2024, to a home in the 21000 block of Nevada Avenue.

When they arrived, officers found Demetrius Robert Owens, 27, sitting on a couch, holding his 3-year-old son in his lap, they said.

The child had a gunshot injury on his left hand. Police said the child had accidentally shot himself with Owens’ handgun, which was recovered at the home.

Owens legally owns the handgun, officials said.

Medical officials treated the child before he was taken to a nearby hospital. No additional information about the child’s condition has been revealed.

Owens was taken into custody. He is charged with:

  • Second-degree child abuse -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
  • Safe firearm storage violation: premises under individual’s control with minor present and inflicted serious impairment of a body function upon self or another -- a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
  • Careless discharge of a firearm causing injury or death -- a two-year high-court misdemeanor.
  • Felony firearm violation -- a two-year felony.

Owens was arraigned at 38th District Court. Bond was set at $50,000, cash/surety.
