Michigan lawmaker claims ‘false accusations’ led to assault, weapons arrest

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan lawmaker Neil Friske issued a statement regarding the police investigation of his arrest for alleged assault and weapons crimes.

State Rep. Friske issued the statement in the afternoon of Monday, June 24 about his being taken into custody on a potential felony offense.

Friske, R-Charlevoix, was released from the Lansing police lockup Friday, June 22, after officials were called at 2:45 a.m. to Forest Road in Lansing for reports of a man roaming around with a gun and shots fired.

Although Friske was released on Friday, police and prosecutors were digging into potential assault, sexual assault, and weapons charges. Friske maintains his innocence.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, there are details that I cannot disclose at the moment. What I can say is that the police were called, resulting in being detained due to false accusations,” Friske said. “However, upon initial investigation, no evidence was found to support the claims, and I was subsequently released with no charges. I am confident that this investigation will totally exonerate me.”

Friske’s staff posted a Facebook statement saying, “Rep. Friske is always exercising his Second Amendment right.”

Rep. Friske is one of the most conservative members of the Legislature, and his legal woes are now making national headlines.
