DETROIT – A 53-year-old man from Southfield has been convicted in the 2018 murder of Thomas Ellis.

According to authorities, Reginald William Ramsey was searching for his wife on May 26, 2018, when he broke into Ellis’ home -- who was a family member. During the break-in, Ellis was killed. Ramsey reportedly removed the 77-year-old’s body from the Detroit home and burned it in a nearby alley.

The body was found days later and police had to bring in an anthropologist to examine the remains in order to determine his race, height, weight and gender. A dentist was consulted to confirm his identity.

A jury found Ramsey guilty of second-degree murder on Friday, June 22. He is expected to be sentenced July 10.

Ramsey faces the possibility of life in prison.
