Michigan judge blocks 24-hour abortion waiting period 2 years after rights were approved

Voter-approved amendment stops Michigan abortion restrictions

A Michigan judge blocks enforcement of several state regulations on abortion.

State regulations include Michigan’s 24-hour waiting period before a pregnancy can be terminated.

The move also stops the state’s requirement that only a doctor can perform an abortion.

Judge Sima Patel issued the preliminary injunction, saying the provisions conflict with a 2022 voter-approved amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights.

Abortion rights were added to the Michigan constitution by nearly 57% of voters months after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
