Woman seeks missing loved ones’ headstones on Detroit’s west side

Leola Moore says she feels nothing but heartache

DETROIT – One woman says she can’t find her family members’ graves at a cemetery on Detroit’s west side.

“The thing about it is, I’m just devastated,” said Leola Moore. “It’s been years now, I have been looking for my father and my grandfather, and my grandmother and my uncle’s burial site just to come up to no ends.”

Moore feels nothing but heartache when she wants to visit family members buried at Forest Hills Cemetery.

“My father and my uncle’s plot has been removed,” Moore said. “It was a military plot. And my grandmother and my grandfather, they had normal ones, but yet, years later, I couldn’t find them either.”

Moore says when trying to get answers, it’s a continuous loop that leads nowhere.

“I’ve reached out to as many people as I could,” Moore said. “They even tried to look and help me, but they also to no end.”

The holidays, as you can imagine, are justn’t the same.

“I almost was accepting it by just going and walking the whole gravesite grieving year after year, especially at Father’s Day and Mother’s Day with my grandmother,” Moore said.

Moore continues her quest for answers for herself and others in a similar situation at an already tough time.

“I would love for Forest Hills Cemetery to have assistance for family members devastated like I am who can’t find their family members,” Moore said.

Cemetery staff members have been on-site looking into the situation.

They apologized for any confusion, but there is a hotline number available for anyone who needs help visiting a gravesite: 313-224-1100.
