RIVER ROUGE, Mich. – An 11-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital Thursday, June 27, after a firework reportedly blew the fingers off her hand in River Rouge.

It happened at about 5 p.m. at a home located near the intersection of Superior and Eaton streets. Police said twin 11-year-old girls discovered the firework inside their home and lit it in a bathroom, assuming it was a sparkler or something not explosive. When they realized their mistake, the girls rushed to take the firework outside, but it blew up in one of the girl’s hands while they were running through the home’s kitchen.

Update: Neighbor’s quick thinking saves 11-year-old twin girls after fireworks accident in River Rouge

The girls ran to a neighbor they knew was a nurse who applied a tourniquet.

Police said all four fingers were blown off the girl’s hand. The home also suffered significant damage.

The other sister suffered burns in the incident. Both girls are expected to survive.
