Inkster woman to spend one year in jail

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A mother was sentenced Thursday, June 27, for her role in a wrong-way Farmington Hills crash that killed her 3-year-old and injured five other children.

The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2022, near the intersection of Inkster and Eight Mile roads.

Authorities said Shelby Symone Ellis was driving north in the southbound lane of Inkster Road when she crashed into a car driven by a 33-year-old Detroit man. She was in the car with her six children, including a 3-year-old that was not in a child seat or using a safety restraint.

Police said Ellis’ blood-alcohol content was 0.26 at the time of the crash. She was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death and child endangerment two days after the crash.

She pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated causing death in February 2024.

Ellis was sentenced to one year in jail, beginning Thursday, and three years probation.

A restitution hearing has been scheduled for July 18.
