What’s Going Around: Outdoor injuries, seasonal allergies, poison ivy

Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.

Wayne County – Outdoor injuries, COVID, seasonal allergies, asthma flare-ups.

Dr. Kevin Dazy -- Children’s Hospital of Michigan Pediatrician

“Honestly, it’s a smattering of everything, which is common for this time of year. At least there’s no flu, no RSV, no rotavirus. A couple of cases of COVID, but it’s really sporadic, so not concerning. Moreso we’re seeing summertime injuries: concussions, broken bones, things like that. Wear your helmets and sunscreen!”

Oakland County – Outdoor injuries, COVID, seasonal allergies, sinus infections, tick & insect bites, rashes, poison ivy.

Dr. Rena Daiza -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Bloomfield Twp.

“This week I have seen an uptick in COVID-19 infections. It is still important for people to monitor acute sick symptoms and get tested for COVID-19. Stay home if you are sick and do not return to work or school unless you are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the help of fever-reducing medication.”

Dr. Parag Patel -- Primary care physician, Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital Troy

“We have been treating people for allergies and related sinus infections, bites from ticks and other insects, along with rashes, including poison ivy.”

Dr. Justin Skrzynski -- Internal medicine physician, Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak

“With the hot weather and storms, the hospital has seen a lot of patients coming in due to heat and power outages, especially the elderly. Make sure to stay hydrated, be mindful of your activity during the hottest parts of the day, and check in with any elderly or ill loved ones or neighbors.”

Emergency Department, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital

“We are seeing a lot of patients with stroke-like symptoms and patients who have chest and abdominal pain. We’re also seeing a lot of falls.”

Emergency Department, Trinity Health Oakland

“We are seeing an increase in outdoor type injuries (ortho, lacerations) and multi-vehicle accidents.”

Washtenaw County – COVID, upper respiratory infections, seasonal allergies, sinus infections, outdoor injuries

Monroe County – Shortness of breath, fall-related injuries, seasonal allergies.

ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital

“We have seen a high number of patients with complaints of chest pain, shortness of breath, and fall-related injuries.”

Macomb County – Outdoor injuries, stomach viruses, dehydration.

Dr. Christopher Shamass -- Emergency physician at McLaren Macomb

“Orthopedic and various soft tissue injuries have been the most common reason patients have sought care in the trauma center, with many injuries resulting from falls. Diagnosed mostly in pediatric patients, there has been a noticeable uptick in gastroenteritis and symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Several patients experiencing weakness and fatigue from dehydration caused by the extreme heat have been treated and released from the ER.”

Livingston County -- Outdoor injuries, COVID, seasonal allergies, asthma flare-ups.

Emergency Department, Trinity Health Livingston

“We continue to treat many patients dealing with outdoor type injuries, as well as multi-vehicle accidents.”
