Detroit teachers ratify contract, send deal to school board for approval

School board to consider agreement at July 9 meeting

DETROIT – The Detroit Federation of Teachers announced it has reached a deal with Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The deal was ratified by membership with 1,100 members voting. The union said 82.8% of members voted yes and 17.2% of members voted no. The contract now goes to the Detroit Board of Education for their approval at the July school board meeting.

Leaders said the new agreement runs for two years. It sets a $90,000 max salary for teachers with a master’s degree. Everyone who remains with the district will receive a $2,000 retention bonus.

The agreement also ensures that every school will see the addition of at least one gender-neutral bathroom. The contract will also provide staff more clarity about how laoffs and transfers get handled.

The DPSCD School Board will consider the agreement at the July 9 regular scheduled school board meeting. If the school board agrees, the tentative agreement will be posted to the Detroit Federation of Teachers’ website.
