DETROIT – Nearly six pounds of fentanyl was seized in Detroit by federal authorities on June 2.

Authorities said it was the largest amount of fentanyl discovered being smuggled through the Port of Detroit and that it was enough to kill 1.3 million people.

According to authorities, officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were inspecting inbound international mail at its Fort Street Cargo Facility when a K-9 alerted them to the presence of a synthetic opioid.

A physical inspection of the package revealed multiple plastic bags of fentanyl pills, which were seized.

The incident remains under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security.
