DETROIT – A police department in Florida confirmed to WDIV that there is an ongoing investigation involving Detroit Tigers broadcaster Craig Monroe.

Monroe began the 2024 MLB season as the Tigers’ primary television analyst, but he’s been absent from broadcasts since the June 7-9 series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit sent a joint statement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, confirming that Monroe’s absence is linked to accusations made against him on social media.

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the social media allegations and take them seriously,” the statement said. “As previously stated, Mr. Monroe has not been on the broadcast schedule and that will continue on an indefinite basis. We will have no further comment and any questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe.”

A woman on Twitter and Instagram accused Monroe of raping her when she was a child while he lived with her family as a minor-leaguer.

She said Monroe was playing for the Port Charlotte Rangers at the time. Monroe played 92 games in Port Charlotte in 1997, a full season in 1998, and 130 games in 1999.

WDIV reached out to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, which confirmed that there is an active investigation into Monroe.

"I can confirm that we have an ongoing investigation involving Craig Monroe,” a spokesperson said. “The only statement I can make at this time is that, ‘This is an active investigation and anyone with information is asked to come forward.’”

The woman’s accusations extend beyond Monroe’s time in Port Charlotte, including while he was with the Tigers.

So far, Monroe has not made an official statement.

The 47-year-old has been a member of the Tigers broadcast team for several years after playing in Detroit from 2003-2007. He spent 672 games as a Tiger during that span.

His MLB career spanned from 2001 to 2009 and included stops in Texas, Detroit, Chicago (Cubs), Minnesota, and Pittsburgh.
